After the Interview: What to Do When You Don’t Hear Back Right Away

By: Kassidy Gartin

You walk out of an interview feeling confident. The conversation flowed, you connected with the hiring manager, and you could genuinely see yourself in the role. Then the waiting begins. Days go by. Your inbox stays quiet. It’s completely normal to feel anxious during this stage, but silence after an interview does not automatically mean rejection. Understanding how to handle this period professionally can protect your confidence and keep you positioned as a strong candidate.

The first step is following up with the right timing. Within 24 hours of your interview, send a brief thank you email expressing appreciation for their time and reinforcing your interest in the position. This keeps you top of mind and shows professionalism. If you have not heard anything within five to seven business days (and no timeline was provided), it is appropriate to send a polite follow-up asking if there are any updates they are able to share. Keep the tone light and positive. If they give you a specific date, respect that timeline before checking in. One or two thoughtful touchpoints are effective; repeated messages can feel excessive. Professional persistence shows interest, while overcommunication can create pressure.

It is also important not to overinterpret silence. Hiring decisions often involve multiple stakeholders, approvals, and internal discussions that candidates never see. Budget reviews, scheduling conflicts, leadership sign-off, or additional interviews with other candidates can all delay communication. Even when a hiring manager is excited about someone, they may need alignment from HR or senior leadership before moving forward. A delayed response is often logistical, not personal. Instead of assuming the worst, focus on maintaining momentum in your job search and keeping your mindset steady.

Behind the scenes, recruiters are usually actively working on your behalf. They may be collecting feedback from interviewers, discussing compensation ranges, or coordinating next steps. Recruiters want processes to move quickly just as much as candidates do, but they often depend on internal timelines outside their control. If you are working with a recruiter, use them as a resource. They can often provide insight, context, or feedback that you would not receive directly from the employer.

Most importantly, protect your confidence during the waiting period. One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is emotionally attaching to a single opportunity before an offer is secured. Even if the role feels like the perfect fit, continue applying and interviewing elsewhere. This keeps you empowered, prevents desperation, and strengthens your negotiation position if an offer does come through. The goal is to stay proactive, professional, and confident. Silence is part of the hiring process but how you respond to it is what truly sets you apart.
